NAPD Virtual 2024 Conference - Using Video Against the Government

NAPD 2024 Rise, Resist, Represent Conference

On March 15, 2024, Elizabeth Cadiz, Chief Public Defender of Aurora, and our co-founder, Prabhas Pokhrel presented an informative session on leveraging video evidence in public defense. The presentation was in a conversational format and addressed the challenges faced by public defenders in managing and utilizing video evidence effectively.

The presentation includes stories of how Aurora has leveraged the government’s video against them to win many battles. Elizabeth also describes the technology Aurora has adopted to enable them to do this – despite staffing limitations and going from handling 48 to 100 trials in one year.

Things that were covered in the presentation:

  • Using video in multiple settings, and walk through
  • Using body cam footage (and call recordings) in trial
    1. While building the theory of defense
    2. How do Elizabeth and her team prepare a video for trial
    3. Admitting video, dealing with objections
  • Using budget hearing footage to get the prosecution to share discovery on time
  • Using City Council meeting recordings to fight against privatization efforts
