In recent years, the widespread use of police body cameras and the surge in audio and video recordings—from social media to surveillance footage—have required the public defense teams at both the Solano County Public Defender’s Office and the Solano County Alternate Public Defender’s Office to review an ever-growing volume of multimedia evidence.
The challenge: Managing growing hours of audio & video discovery
Need for fast, accurate transcription: With hours and hours of video discovery to review, the team needed a quick and reliable way to transcribe conversations without the cost of sending it to traditional transcription providers or spending the time to do it manually in-house.
Dealing with incompatible formats: The team frequently received video from a wide range of sources including local and state police, and large retailers, often in non-standard formats that they struggled to open and review. Constantly converting these files in order to open them created an unnecessary burden on staff.
Extracting key moments for trial: Attorneys pull specific clips from bodycam videos to present in court. Some staff were using other video editing tools to compile evidence, but the process was complicated.
Multi-language transcription and translation: The office has a multi-lingual client base and staff, and needed transcription services that could work with discovery in multiple languages (particularly Spanish and English) and provide translation services.
